I realized I was late in getting birthday cards for my twin niece and nephew so had to rush out to a local major store (which I rarely frquent) and get some before it was TOO late to mail them. Wanting to leave the red cotton tee shirt on, I reached into the "red' section of one of my 'lycra shorts dresser drawers' and pulled out a heavy duty pair of lycra/nylon shiny reddish/orangish squarecuts with black and blue stripes on each side and put them on over my red lycra pouch thong and headed out to the store a few blocks away. I guess because it is midday Friday, beautiful weather, SO many people were out I was getting reactions from all over the place, pedestrians, motorists, waiting at the corner traffic lights, passing the crowded banks, etc. When I got into the store, it was crowded! Apparently the parents received the 'list of things their children need for school' and this store had a big return-to-school sale. I was more intent on getting the cards so tried not to pay too much attention and the cards weren't too close to the school supply aisle. All of a sudden, I hear some young 'macho' deliverymen going nuts and realized it was towards me as I was flipping thru the cards and they clustered around the stockboys, etc. to have a good laugh as they yelled "Rambo!" The female clerks in the aisle seemed to like it, though, and had their giggles and comments but when I got to the line at the register (one of six) they were long lines filled with mothers buying school goods (among others). I boldy stood in line and waited my turn as the jeers and geers passed across the floor (mostly positive, thank goodness) and as usual, could only imagine their impression of my shiny butt and crotch. I got the same reaction going to and at the post office where I had to fill out the cards and drop them in the box (no line this time) but a lot of people getting their mail out in time for the weekend. I realized when I got home the short shorts were more exclusively SWIMshorts and although I've worn some 'unusual' lycra gear in public before, perhaps these couldn't be looked upon as 'running gear,' eg. New York City law actually allows swimwear in public so what the hell. In Florida, eg., I wouldn't think twice about wearing swimwear in public but the reaction today really threw me for a loop, it was as if I entered a stadium or something with the reactions from so many but it was positive all around.
