short business trip this past week, full day's project meeting Wednesday with a major US Federal Gov't Agency that I had to conduct with some big whigs overseeing it. After a long drive, I arrived at the hotel Tuesday night near the office building so I'd be relaxed for the grueling full day's meeting. I changed into my teal nylon lycra shorts and teal cotton athletic shirt to get some snacks and beverages and some money from from the ATM(automatic teller machine). Much to my surprise, they had no ATM or food stuff available so I had to go to the only place open so late at night, a combo gas station/food center across the highway. I was still exhausted from the long drive but couldn't help overhearing the reaction I got from the motorists on the highway I had to cross, those at the gas pumps and the other customers of all ages, especially while waiting in the check-out line. I'm used to the attention at home but didn't expect such a reaction here. I heard the same comments (whether directed at me or under their breath) about my shiny butt, nice package or 'interesting' gear. I took it in stride through and could only head back to the hotel for some rest. Waking up early, I had to take advantage of the hotel's free continental breakfast before before the crowds came down. I went out a back exit (near my room) around the hotel grounds to have my morning smoke (smoke-free hotel!) on my way to the lobby where breakfast was, wearing my shiny navy/neon lime swirl nylon lycra shorts and royal/yellow cotton tee. Hey, who else would be up for breakfast at this hour, let alone someone I knew? As fate would have it, as I got near the entrance of the hotel, here was a guy apparently stretching out before his morning jog, gym shorts, tee and bandana and as I approached the entrance, he greeted me by name! I almost shit in my pants when I realized it was the Regional Director for the Gov't Agency who recognized me from another project we did a few months back, numero uno of everyone scheduled to attend the meeting in 90 minutes. He too lived farther away so decided to stay at the local hotel. I started to swell in my neon shorts as he asked 'you finished your run?' He reached out to shake my hand, tg I flipped the cigarette seconds earlier (might leave a bad impression), and I said 'yeah, just a mile though.' What a lie that was. I continued 'see you in a bit' and continued into the lobby for some bacon, eggs, coffee and a donut which I brought to my room. Now I had to shower and change into my grey business suit, pressed shirt, tie, shiny shoes, etc., (and grey nylon lycra thong) for a long day's meeting. I arrived early, him shortly thereafter (ironically, dressed casually) yet I did OK with the meeting as if we never saw eachother earlier. I just hope I left a good impression and that on our next project he doesn't ask me to jog with him!
